First let me introduce myself. I am Amy Weaver, a children's book author with two books in print and many in the shadows. I live in Aurora, Colorado with my family after recently relocating from Las Vegas, NV. After college I was fortunate enough to pursue a successful career in Information Technology. Now, having left the corporate world, my focus is on raising, nurturing and enjoying my children. Striving to help children embrace cultural diversity and to encourage knowledge of multiple languages I insisted upon my children's book series being printing in a bilingual format with the English and Spanish languages printed together. My first children's book series was, in fact printed bilingually with a focus on problem solving, teamwork, and self-confidence. Exited to see the first two in the series go to print, I foresee the entire collection being offered bilinagually.
The birth of the bilingual version of this book series is a story that might be common but is important for me to tell. My mother, Mary Ann Garrett, has dedicated much of her life to helping and serving Spanish-speaking people. She has worked first as an instructor at the University of South Alabama, then as a bilingual and ESL teacher in Pasadena, TX, and currently is working as a missionary teacher in Quito, Ecuador where she has established an English school for people of low economic means. Through her understanding of the difficulties that the language barrier presents to Spanish-speaking families living in an English-speaking country, I realized how difficult it can be for them to enjoy the bond of a special reading time with their children. As my mother constantly discovered, quality bilingual books are in limited supply. My desire in writing this series in a bilingual format is to provide an opportunity for Spanish speaking parents to read the stories in Spanish to their children, and for the children to be able to read the stories back to their parents in English. As the mother of four beautiful children who love “story hour”, I understand the value of the bond that develops during reading time with our little ones. I believe this to be a precious way for children to appreciate the importance of languages, literacy, and literature and to be able to bridge the gap between two languages and two worlds.
My consecutive projects have taken life in verse. With magical, stories twisting and turning on the tongue delivering entertainment and wonder! Look for Mudslide on Mars and Garrett and His Glorious Goblin Crystals coming soon to a shelf near you!
